How to Pick a College
If you want to know how to pick a college, there are a few things you should think about. The reason you're going to college and what you're looking to study are important factors. This article will give you a few pointers to make sure you choose the right school for you.
1. Do you know what you want to study? If you know what field you're interested in pursuing, you might want to look at schools that are reputable for those studies. If you're not sure what field you want to go into, that's okay too, many people think they know what they want and then end up changing their mind. If you don't know what you want to major in, try to narrow down you school choices to those that offer a wide variety of programs. You don't want to be stuck at an art school if you want to be an engineer.
2. Where would you like to study? An important part of deciding how to pick a college is deciding where you'd like to spend the next four or more years. If you want to stay relatively close to home, look at all the schools in your state. If you'd like to go somewhere warm, think about applying at a Southern state or in California. If you want to be near a big city, look for schools in those areas.
3. How many people do you want to share campus with? If you're coming from a small hometown, a huge school may not be your cup of tea. Students from small towns that go to large schools often experience the culture shock of being around so many different people. If you like lots of people around, maybe you're okay with having a larger school.
4. Do you participate in sports or other extracurricular activities? If you want to continue theater or soccer when you go to college, you need to make sure that the school you're applying to offers you that chance. If you have to try out for a sports team at the college you want to attend, weigh your skills against how many people typically go out for the team. College sports are usually a little bit harder to get into than in high school.
5. How much money are you willing to spend? You would think money would be a higher step in how to pick a college, but there are so many grants and scholarships offered these days that you shouldn't let money stand in the way of a school you really love. In the same sense, sometimes you simply can't afford the school you like. Consider the types of scholarships you can apply for and what kind of financial help you're eligible for.
